目前，模具行业专家罗百辉初步统计，中国约有模具生产厂点2万余家，从业人员有50多万人，全年模具产值达534亿元人民币。罗百辉表示，近年来，模具行业结构调整步伐加快，主要表现为大型、精密、复杂、长寿命模具标准件发展速度高于行业的总体发展速度；塑料模和压铸模比例增大；面向市场的专业模具厂家数量及能力增加较快；随着经济体制改革的不断深入，“三资”及民营企业的发展很快。
中国模具工业的发展在地域分布上存在不平衡性，东南沿海地区发展快于中西部地区，南方的发展快于北方。模具生产最集中的地区在珠江三角和长江三角地区，其模具产值约占全国产值的三分之二以上。
